CHA was a great adventure, but the week that followed was equally exciting: I had the immense pleasure of spending a week with my sweet friend Marjie Kemper and her family!! Saying i was spoiled by them is an understatement and i can only hope they'll come to Belgium in a not too far future. The Charles family (me, my 3 men, our dog, cat and horses) are all waiting for them!
Marjie and i left the CHA, Anaheim and California on Tuesday morning to arrive in New York by the end of the day.
Wednesday was a day off, we needed to recharge our batteries after CHA: a bit of journaling, a bit of sorting through our stuff, a lot of tea and lots of movements in slow motion (at least, for me!). The day ended with a fantastic meal provided by chef Mr Kemper: pasta with frech mussel, with an Italian sausage sauce. Nom nom! Did i mention i got spoiled??
Miam miam! Je vous ai dit que j'ai été gâtée??
Thursday started with a nice dose of excitement: Marjie did a live streaming for the Charity Wings. I was blown away by her professionalism: watching her getting ready and do her thing was a great lesson for me!
To chill out, we went shopping after that. I discovered Joann, Staples, A.C. Moore and CBS. Wish we had a couple of those over here! And though i was drooling in front of this shop, i didn't even go inside. Good girl!
Friday was city day: Marjie drove us to Brooklyn. She showed me the city from all sides (ok, i helped, by playing GPS. Me, of all people...).
Ouaip, moi... GPS...).
I even tried to get into this building on the way, but Marjie talked me out of it.
In Brooklyn, Louise Nelson was waiting for us.
I love her sensibility and her sense of humor, how good to get together again!!
We had a yummy lunch, then the 3 of us headed to the Art Library, where all the sketchbooks from the Sketchbook Project are stored.
After a free subscription, we were allowed to select sketchbooks to look at. Which we did, all afternoon, going from one sketchbook to another, drooling over some, laughing and even shedding an emotional tear over others!
This was my personal favorite from those i got to see that day. It's a sketchbook by Sheena Priddle. Check her out if you go to the Art Library!
Of course we left the Library with our very own sketchbook each. I'm looking forward starting to play in it!
The neighborhood of the Library is as interesting as the Library itself! You know my love for rusted metal. Can you image my face coming accross this piece of street art??
But the day came to an end and it was time to say goodbye to Louise. Marjie used her real GPS and got us back home safely.
Saturday was another city day: Manhattan day! I'm absolutely concinved i lived in Manhattan in a previous life. Because everytime i go there, it feels like coming home!
Marjie showed me the art store Dick Blick. They have a complete wall with nothing but encaustic products!! Heaven!! No such thing here in Belgium!
Another piece of heaven on earth: The Garage in Hell's Kitchen. A 2 floor indoor flea market in the middle of the city. I had a hard time drooling without anyone noticing!
We needed another quiet day on Sunday. And what better way to spend it than with a bit of journaling, going through our CHA notes, some good chicken with pasta and tea. Lots of tea!
I flew back home on Monday, how can one moment be so exciting and so sad at the same time?! But i could not leave the Kemper nest without a photo of the sidewalk in front of their house. When i arrived the first day, it took me a couple of second to realize this does not mean you can not dump fish... lol.
Marjie and co: Every moment was a blast. So many memories to cherish.... THANK YOU!!!
Miss you to pieces!!

RépondreSupprimerI am looking forward to your new projects and makes - that was inspiring for you for sure I think!
Liefs Frea
RépondreSupprimerI love reading your account of your time in America. Sounds like you had a blast! I'm looking forward to seeing your new projects with things you learned while you were here.
RépondreSupprimerI can imagine your delight at being spoiled when staying at Marije's house. Chef Kemper's pasta looks to die for. I am soooo pleased you had a good time. You deserve it !

RépondreSupprimerDear France. I love your blog so much! And your videos... You are so sweet and earnest. You inspire me to be a better person some days. Thanks so much for sharing your journey with me, and I am looking forward to seeing great things from you this year.
RépondreSupprimerI ran across the journal project a few months ago for the first time. I started putting my pennies away to participate in that. It is an awesome prospect to have your work in a permanent collection like that isn't it? I am looking forward to seeing the traveling part when they come next to Wichita, Kansas!
I can only imagine the wonders of the Dick Blick store or The Garage...the street art in NYC is truly awesome...and the immigration office would enrich America, but leave Belgium bereft I'm afraid. We would be stealing one of their national treasures!
Thanks again for the wonderful giveaway you have chosen to share too! Congrats to the winner!
Sounds like Marjie was a wonderful host. I would love to meet you both someday, how awesome to spend a week with her!! I'm glad that you both had a wonderful time!! Thank you for sharing your adventure.
RépondreSupprimerThank you so much for sharing the second half of your excursion to the U.S., France! I will be in NYC soon, but only for an afternoon. I am going to check out how close I will be the HCFM, and, hopefully, manage a visit! Love the photo of you wistfully standing in front of the Pandora store. That would be me, too! Lastly, thanks for the opportunity to share in some CHA goodies! On my "bucket lit" to attend CHA one day! Mwah! KayW

The Sketchbook project seems like an amazing reservoir of social and artistic history. A perfect combination. I had to laugh about your reaction to Dick Blick. We don't have that kind of store in Alaska either, and I am always just blown away by the sheer volume of cool and interesting products. I always spend too much money. LOL. Thanks for sharing your adventure.
